1516: the birth of the word 'ghetto'
On 29 March 1516, the Venetian Senate confined the city's Jews to a small island in Cannaregio, site of an old foundry — getto in Venetian. The word became the name, and the world's first ghetto was born. Houses, limited in footprint, rose up to seven stories — the city's highest.
Five synagogues — Scola Grande Tedesca, Canton, Italiana, Levantina, Spagnola — settled discreetly in the upper floors, invisible from the street. Despite the nightly lockdown, the Ghetto became a centre of Talmudic and kabbalistic study reaching from Salonika to Amsterdam. Napoleon opened its gates in 1797.
