The Arsenal, the largest factory in the world
Founded in 1104, the Arsenal of Venice covered 45 hectares and employed up to 16,000 arsenalotti. At its 16th-century peak, its assembly line — the first in history — could build a full galley in a single day. Its labour organisation prefigured French royal manufactures two centuries later.
Guarded by the feared Council of Ten, the Republic's secret tribunal, the Arsenal protected its innovations on pain of death. Master carpenters sworn to the Doge could neither emigrate nor share their craft beyond the walls. Dante himself evokes the Arsenal in Inferno, canto XXI.

At each stop, open your phone camera: an augmented reality character appears on the façade and speaks your language. Hunt the clue — it materializes as golden letters on the real wall or floats in front of you.
