The cloth and its guardians
The Shroud appears in Europe in the 14th century, passes through Templar hands according to several sources, then to the dukes of Savoy in 1453. Emmanuel-Philibert installs it in Turin in 1578 to bring the relic closer to Charles Borromeo. The cathedral is built around it.
In the 17th century, architect Guarino Guarini designs the Cappella della Sindone, a baroque masterpiece whose star-shaped dome hides a geometric language. Palazzo Reale, San Lorenzo and Palazzo Carignano share the same grammar — a network some attribute to a surviving Templar lodge.
