The Erosion and Resilience of an Ancient City
Civita di Bagnoregio, whose origins date back more than 2,500 years to the Etruscans and then the Romans, has always been a strategic location. Perched on a volcanic tuff hill, it was the birthplace of Saint Bonaventure (Giovanni di Fidanza) in 1221, one of the greatest Franciscan theologians. From the Middle Ages, the town began to suffer from erosion, a natural phenomenon constantly weakening its clay cliffs, causing landslides.
Several devastating earthquakes, notably in 1695, accelerated the process, gradually isolating Civita from the nearby town of Bagnoregio. Over centuries, many houses and structures were lost to the void. The construction of the unique modern pedestrian bridge in 1965 offered a vital link but did not stop the erosion. Today, Civita is inhabited by only a handful of families who perpetuate the memory and life of this extraordinary city, defying its fate as 'the dying city'.
