Expel the Jesuits, abolish slavery, break the Inquisition — and survive it all
Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, first Marquis of Pombal, ruled Portugal for 27 years with an engineer's brutality. He rebuilt Lisbon in six months, expelled the Jesuits from Portugal and Brazil, abolished slavery in metropolitan Portugal, removed the distinction between cristãos-velhos and cristãos-novos, and sent to death every noble who crossed him. The Portuguese Enlightenment: efficient, authoritarian, implacable. Eight markers from the Avenida da Liberdade to the roundabout bearing his name rebuild the logic of that undivided power.
« "I did not make this people happy. I made them powerful." »— — Marquis of Pombal, quoted by Camilo Castelo Branco
Appointed Secretary of State in 1750, three years before the earthquake, Sebastião de Carvalho used the disaster to become the indispensable man. King José I, traumatised, gave him everything. Pombal used it to crush his political enemies. In 1758, after an attempt on the king's life, he publicly executed the Távoras, one of the realm's oldest families: the Duke of Aveiro was broken on the wheel, his wife strangled, their children forced to watch. The Inquisition itself was placed under royal tutelage.
The next year, Pombal expelled the Society of Jesus from all Portuguese territories — six years before France, twelve before Spain. In 1761 he abolished slavery in metropolitan Portugal (but not in the colonies), dropped the distinction between converted Jews and "old Christians", reformed Coimbra university and founded the country's first lay schools. Disgraced in 1777 when the king died, he died in exile at Pombal, his estate, where his tomb and libraries still stand. His great portrait is the one still visible on the Rua Augusta arch, where his foot crushes Inquisition and fanaticism.
