Fernando Pessoa, a clerk born in Lisbon in 1888, wrote almost nothing under his own name. Instead he invented seventy-two heteronyms — not pseudonyms but complete poets, with biographies, styles, horoscopes and arguments among themselves. Four are major: Alberto Caeiro the pagan naturalist, Ricardo Reis the stoic Latinist, Álvaro de Campos the futurist engineer, and Bernardo Soares, author of the Book of Disquiet. Eight traces carved into Chiado connect the cafés where each supposedly wrote their work.

The day of triumph and its heteronyms
8 March 1914 is remembered in Portuguese history as o dia triunfal. That day, Fernando Pessoa stepped up to a tall chest of drawers, placed a blank sheet on it, and wrote thirty-five poems in one go under the name Alberto Caeiro — a pagan shepherd he had never imagined. Then, he said, he wrote six poems as Ricardo Reis, and two as Álvaro de Campos. In a single day, four writers had come into being. Pessoa spent the rest of his life making them argue and answer one another in the literary magazines.
Dying in 1935 at 47, he left a trunk of 27,543 unsorted sheets. The Book of Disquiet, his masterpiece by Bernardo Soares, was not published until 1982. Today, the bronze figure seated at A Brasileira's terrace — the café where Pessoa took his morning absinthe before heading to his commercial-correspondence job — is Chiado's most famous statue. Readers still set an imaginary coffee before him, as if he were writing a page for Caeiro, Reis or Campos.
