From Piazza San Gaetano to Spaccanapoli, you follow the Greek decumanus maximus, pass beneath San Lorenzo Maggiore where an intact Greco-Roman market sleeps, and cross Via dei Tribunali to the Duomo. A rumour has run since antiquity: the first colonists of Neapolis hid an Alexandrian library down there.

Three cities in one
In the 8th century BCE, Greeks from Cumae founded Parthenope, then Neapolis on Pizzofalcone hill. They dug cisterns, quarries and religious crypts into the yellow tuff. The Romans inherited the network and added the 96-kilometre Serino aqueduct, which supplied the city until the 19th century. Beneath San Lorenzo Maggiore an entire 1st-century Greco-Roman market street still stands intact.
During the Second World War, more than 200 000 Neapolitans took shelter in these galleries under Allied bombs. Graffiti, camp beds and fragments of crockery can still be seen. The total network exceeds 80 kilometres, only a few sections of which are open to the public. The rest awaits explorers: whole quarters, forgotten cisterns, wells silent for centuries.
