Seven symbols before the inquisitor erases them
In 1587, famine ravages Triora and the Inquisition accuses the women gathering at night at the Cabotina. More than 300 are interrogated, several tortured, some executed. Before dying, one of them carved seven signs into the village. Find them.
« "We are not she-devils, we are the starving mothers of the village." »— — Triora Trial, 1588
In 1587, an unprecedented famine struck the hinterland of San Remo. Triora, a fortified village in the Argentina valley, named its scapegoats: lone women, healers, those believed to gather at the Cabotina. The Bishop of Albenga opened the largest witchcraft trial in Italian history.
Interrogations lasted two years; archives describe torture, extorted confessions and executions. Four centuries later, Triora has turned the memory of the drama into identity: an ethnographic Witchcraft Museum, dark lanes and a still-visible Cabotina make the village a feminist and historical pilgrimage site.
