Beneath Toledo's cobblestones, another city awaits
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
Toledo is built on a labyrinth. Roman cisterns, Arab passages, Visigothic crypts, escape tunnels — beneath every street, beneath every square, another world exists. And it has not finished giving up its secrets.
Toledo is perched on a rocky spur encircled by the Tagus. This natural defensive position drove every civilisation that occupied it to dig rather than spread. The Romans built aqueducts and underground cisterns. The Visigoths added crypts. The Arabs dug passages between palaces and baths. The Jews created hiding places. The Christians built catacombs beneath their churches. The result is an underground network of extraordinary complexity, only part of which has been explored.
« "In Toledo, when you dig to lay a pipe, you find an Arab bath. When you dig deeper, you find a Roman cistern. We stopped digging." »— — A Toledo town planner, 21st century
Toledo's underground history begins with the Romans, who founded Toletum in the 2nd century BC. To supply water to this city perched on a rock, they built a sophisticated hydraulic system including aqueducts, cisterns and channels carved into the bedrock. The Cuevas de Hércules, beneath the present-day church of San Ginés, are among the most impressive remains of this underground engineering.
The Visigoths, who made Toledo their capital in 554, added crypts and royal tombs. The Arabs, masters of hydraulics, perfected the cistern network and dug the hammams whose remains regularly emerge during road works. Beneath the Jewish quarter, secret passages allowed escape during pogroms — some led directly to the Tagus.
Discoveries continue. In 2019, renovation works in a restaurant uncovered perfectly preserved 11th-century Arab baths. In 2021, a road collapse revealed an unknown Visigothic gallery. Archaeologists estimate that less than thirty per cent of Toledo's underground network has been mapped. The rest waits — beneath your feet.
