When Christians, Jews and Muslims shared the same walls
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
For three centuries, Toledo was the only place in Europe where three civilisations prayed, traded and thought side by side. This miracle has a name: la convivencia. And its traces are still everywhere.
Toledo resembles no other city in Spain. On this rock encircled by the Tagus, three peoples built their temples, traced their lanes, inscribed their prayers in stone — sometimes on the same wall. Here, an Arab palace became a church. There, a synagogue bears inscriptions in Hebrew and Arabic beneath a Mudéjar ceiling. Every stone is a palimpsest. And this game gives you the keys to read it.
« "In Toledo, God speaks three languages. And the stone has remembered them all." »— — In the judería, between the synagogue and the mosque, the silence has a particular accent
When the Moors conquered Toledo in 711, they found an already cosmopolitan Visigothic city. Rather than raze it, they built on top. The Mozarabic Christians kept their churches. The Jews, persecuted under the Visigoths, finally found peace. Three communities began to coexist — not without tension, but with a tolerance unmatched in medieval Europe.
This was the age of the Toledo School of Translators, where scholars of all three faiths translated Aristotle, Avicenna and the Talmud together. Greek knowledge, filtered through Arabic commentary, was transmitted to the Latin West from these Toledan workshops. Without this collaboration, the European Renaissance would have taken a very different form.
But the convivencia had its limits. The Christian reconquest of 1085 by Alfonso VI initially promised tolerance. Then came forced conversions, the expulsion of the Jews in 1492, that of the Moriscos in 1609. The dream died. But within Toledo's walls, it remains legible — for those who know where to look.
