For three centuries, Toledo's Inquisition tribunal tried thousands for heresy, secret Judaism and witchcraft. Its archives are open. Its places still stand. Its methods still chill the blood.
The Spanish Inquisition was not a medieval phenomenon: it was created in 1478 and not abolished until 1834. Toledo, seat of the Primate Archbishopric of Spain, was one of its most active tribunals. Autos-da-fé were held in the Plaza de Zocodover. The accused were locked in dungeons, some of which survive. The trial records, preserved in the Archivo Histórico Nacional, reveal a system of terrifying bureaucratic precision.

« "The Holy Office did not torture to punish. It tortured to know. That is far worse." »— — From the trial records of the Toledo tribunal, 16th century
The Toledo Inquisition tribunal was established in 1485, seven years after the Catholic Monarchs created the Spanish Inquisition. Its first Grand Inquisitor, Tomás de Torquemada, a fanatical Dominican friar, installed a system that would operate for three hundred and fifty years: anonymous denunciation, secret arrest, interrogation under torture, confiscation of property.
The main victims were the conversos — Jews converted to Christianity, suspected of secretly practising their former faith. In Toledo, where the Jewish community had been one of the largest in Spain, denunciations were massive. A neighbour who lit candles on Friday evening, a family that did not eat pork, a merchant who closed shop on Saturday — everything was suspect.
Toledo's public autos-da-fé were held in the Plaza de Zocodover, in the heart of the city. The condemned wore the sambenito, a tunic of infamy painted with flames and devils. Some were "reconciled" and sentenced to penance. Others were "released to the secular arm" — a euphemism meaning they would be burned alive.
5 stages through the city
The gameplay: AR, camera, hidden clues
At each stop, open your phone camera: an augmented reality character appears on the façade and speaks your language. Hunt the clue — it materializes as golden letters on the real wall or floats in front of you. When you find it, the phone vibrates, an AR chest opens and reveals your answer fragment. 8 stops, 8 clues to find with the camera, 1 final code.
The stops on your route are a surprise. You'll discover them one by one, guided by your phone, starting from the meeting point.
