When Hannibal crossed the Iberian Peninsula in the 3rd century BC, his scouts reported that the Celtiberians of Toledo forged swords of unmatched quality. The Roman legionaries, after suffering those blades, adopted them: the gladius hispaniensis became the standard weapon of the legions. Since then, Toledo has never stopped forging. Even today, the Fábrica de Armas produces the ceremonial swords of the Spanish army.

Twenty-two centuries of fire and steel
The secret of Toledan blades came down to three factors: exceptionally pure iron ore extracted from the Montes de Toledo, the waters of the Tagus whose temperature and chemical composition offered ideal tempering, and a know-how passed from master to apprentice for millennia — from the Celtiberians to the Arab smiths, then to the Christian craftsmen.
Under Arab rule (711-1085), Toledo's smiths perfected the technique of damascening — the inlay of gold and silver wire into steel — which became the city's signature. Toledan swords were exported across the Islamic and Christian worlds. They armed the warriors of Al-Andalus and the knights of the Reconquista alike.
In 1761, Charles III created the Real Fábrica de Espadas, established on the banks of the Tagus to harness the river's hydraulic power. This royal manufactory, predecessor of today's Fábrica de Armas, produced the blades that armed the Spanish army for two centuries. Today, the craftsmen of the Calle de las Armas carry on the tradition — between tourism and artisanal excellence.
