Bologna, the Learned beneath the waters
Founded in 1088, the University of Bologna is the oldest in the Western world. Around it stretch 62 kilometres of UNESCO porticoes and a dense network of canals drawn from the Reno and the Savena. Until the 19th century, water still turned beneath the red city.
Dominated by the unfinished Gothic basilica of San Petronio and the medieval Due Torri, Bologna was also a hotbed of free thought where masters and students defied prohibitions. The Finestrella on Via Piella, opening onto the Moline canal, remains the last window onto this water city.
