In the 6th century BCE, Poseidonia thrived as a Greek colony in Magna Graecia, its grand Doric temples honoring Poseidon, Hera, and Athena. But as Roman legions closed in around 273 BCE, the high priests of Poseidon unearthed a sacred treasure—gold votives, ritual artifacts, and a cursed idol—vowing to hide it from invaders. They scattered cryptic clues in inscriptions, tomb frescoes, and temple foundations, binding the hoard with a divine curse: only the worthy could reclaim it, or face Poseidon's wrath. Centuries later, the ruins whisper of this lost fortune, untouched amid the sands. Explore the Basilica, Temple of Neptune, and Athena's shrine to decode the priests' map. Track symbols from the forum to the amphitheater, outwit the ancient safeguards, and unearth Poseidonia's ultimate secret before the curse claims another soul. The treasure awaits the bold—will you solve the mystery?

« One of the greatest moments in the history of architecture. »— Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, 1787, after his visit to Paestum
Founded by the Greeks in the 7th century BC as Poseidonia, in honor of the god of the sea, Paestum was a flourishing colony of Magna Graecia. Its Doric temples dedicated to Hera and Athena are now considered the best-preserved in the Greek world. After the Roman conquest in 273 BC, the city was renamed Paestum and integrated into the Empire, adapting its urban planning with a forum, an amphitheater, and villas. Its decline began with the fall of Rome and barbarian incursions, exacerbated by malaria and the silting of its port.
Around the 9th century, its inhabitants deserted the coastal plain to settle on the nearby heights of Capaccio, leaving the city abandoned. For nearly a thousand years, Paestum was swallowed by vegetation and sediments, its temples reduced to ghostly silhouettes, forgotten by the world. It was only with the construction of a new royal road in 1746 that the ruins were rediscovered, capturing the imagination of artists and scholars, from Piranesi to Goethe, and inscribing Paestum in the history of modern archaeology.
