Three Doric temples and a lost rose
According to tradition, the priestesses of Poseidon kept the Rose of Paestum — a mystical flower that bloomed twice a year and whose essence was said to extend life. A fresco hidden in the walls of the Basilica is said to reveal its location among the olive trees of the site.
« "Bis florem — it blooms twice." »— Virgil, Georgics IV
Around 600 BCE, Greek colonists from Sybaris founded Poseidonia on the Sele plain. In travertine limestone they built three colossal Doric temples: the Basilica dedicated to Hera (around 550 BCE), the Temple of Neptune — actually a second Hera sanctuary (around 460 BCE) — and the Temple of Ceres, actually dedicated to Athena (around 500 BCE). The Temple of Neptune, almost intact, is considered the finest Doric temple in the world after the Parthenon.
Conquered by the Lucanians around 400 BCE, then a Roman colony in 273, the city took the name Paestum. It fell into oblivion in the Middle Ages, covered by malaria and olive trees, before being rediscovered in the 18th century by Grand Tour travellers — Goethe, Piranesi, Shelley. The frescoes of the Tomb of the Diver (480 BCE), unique examples of preserved figurative Greek painting, were unearthed here in 1968.

Absolutely. The puzzles aren't obvious — a curious teen will sweat just enough to be proud of cracking them. Progressive hints prevent frustration: if stuck, unlock hint level 1, then 2, then 3.
Morning between 10 and 11, or early afternoon around 2 PM, is ideal. You still have daylight ahead, Paestum, province of Salerno is less crowded, and the light is better for camera clues.
