The city of popes
In the 13th century, struggles between papacy and Emperor Frederick II drove pontiffs out of Rome. Viterbo, ringed by Etruscan-medieval walls, became their residence. The Palazzo dei Papi, a gothic masterpiece overlooking the Faul valley, hosted five conclaves between 1261 and 1281. The longest began on 29 November 1268 after Clement IV's death and lasted until 1 September 1271.
Exasperated, the Viterbesi locked the cardinals in, rationed bread and water, then had the roof of the Sala del Conclave removed to let the rain in. Gregory X was finally elected. He enacted the rule of the sealed conclave. The San Pellegrino quarter, a labyrinth of medieval alleys, arches and profferli, remains the best preserved in central Italy. The Fontana Grande, completed in 1279, is still the most monumental gothic fountain in Italy.
