From Hadrian's mausoleum to papal fortress
In 139 CE, Emperor Hadrian finished his family mausoleum on the right bank of the Tiber. Converted into a fortress in the 5th century, it took its current name in 590 when Gregory the Great saw the archangel Michael sheathing his sword atop it, signalling the end of the plague. The building became a papal refuge: Nicholas III had the Passetto di Borgo built in 1277 to link the castle to the Vatican.
On 6 May 1527, Charles V's landsknechts stormed Rome. Clement VII crossed the Passetto barely dressed, escaping imperial troops who sacked the city for eight days. Three thousand Romans were massacred. The pope remained holed up in Castel Sant'Angelo for seven months. Chronicles of that hasty flight mention a sealed chest forgotten in the papal apartments of the castle — never located since.
