Perched on three gypsum hills crowned by the Rocca Manfrediana, the Clock Tower and the Santuario del Monticino, Brisighella preserves a covered, raised lane — the Via degli Asini — unique in Italy. A smuggling network used it to move heretical archives, safe from customs and inquisitors.

Brisighella, town of gypsum
Founded in 1290 by Maghinardo Pagani, Brisighella later passed to the Manfredi of Faenza who built the Rocca in the 14th century. The town lived on DOP olive oil and gypsum, quarried from the white hills above the Lamone valley.
The Via degli Asini, carved into the houses to shelter the muleteers’ stables, was built in the 14th century as a wall walk and turned into a commercial passage. Its half-moons opening onto the valley still echo the clatter of hooves and the cunning of Apennine smugglers.
