Gubbio, the grey stone city
Attested by the Umbri (Iguvine Tables, 3rd-1st century BC), Gubbio became a free medieval commune that long resisted the Baglioni of Perugia. Its Palazzo dei Consoli (1332), built on a vast retaining viaduct, dominates Piazza Grande like a prow over the valley.
The Corsa dei Ceri, held every May 15 since 1160 in honour of Saint Ubaldo, bishop who died in 1160, pits three corporations — masons, peasants, farriers. Victory is ritual: the order of arrival is always the same. But the winding route passes exactly through the old Guelph and Ghibelline sites.
