Mount Amiata, an ancient extinct volcano in the heart of Tuscany, was for centuries a source of wealth due to its cinnabar deposits, the mercury ore. Abbadia San Salvatore, in particular, hosted one of Europe's largest mercury mines, the Miniera del Siele.
