Aquileia, from Rome to Venice
Founded in 181 BC as a Roman colony to protect the Empire's borders, Aquileia quickly became a major port and a commercial and cultural crossroads. By the 4th century AD, it was one of the ten largest cities in the Roman world, capital of Regio X Venetia et Histria. It was also a major center of nascent Christianity, with an active community and a strong episcopal tradition, as evidenced by the role of Saint Chromatius.
In 452 AD, the Western Roman Empire was in decline. Attila, the 'Scourge of God', led his Huns across Italy. Aquileia, strongly fortified, was besieged and eventually fell after a long siege, suffering almost total destruction. This tragic event triggered a massive migration of its inhabitants to the lagoon islands, laying the first stones of what would become Venice, a new empire born from the ashes of the old.
