Eight painted chimeras on the Serra de Sintra
Ferdinand II of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, husband of Queen Maria II, transformed the abandoned Hieronymite monastery into a fairy-tale palace blending Manueline, neo-Gothic, neo-Moorish and neo-Renaissance. Lord Byron had called it "glorious Eden." Eight frescoes scattered through the park hide the king's secret signature and the site of Europe's first exotic arboretum.
« "Lo! Cintra's glorious Eden intervenes in variegated maze of mount and glen." »— — Lord Byron, Childe Harold, 1812
In 1838, King consort Ferdinand II bought the monastery of Nossa Senhora da Pena, damaged by the 1755 earthquake and then struck by lightning. He entrusted the project to Prussian baron Ludwig von Eschwege, who mixed Moorish crenellations, Manueline vaults, a Byzantine dome and Bavarian castle towers. The palace became Europe's first romantic edifice, predating Ludwig II of Bavaria's Neuschwanstein (1869).
Ferdinand also turned the 200 hectares of the serra into a botanical park where Japanese camellias, Australian ferns and Californian sequoias grew — the first open-air collection of exotic plants on the continent. In 1995, Sintra became the first cultural landscape inscribed by UNESCO in Europe.
