In 1460, Prince Henry the Navigator's legendary school at Cape Sagres fell silent
You are a Royal Archivist, dispatched from Lisbon to Sagres in the present day, tasked with deciphering an ancient mystery.
In 1460, Prince Henry the Navigator's legendary school
Master Jaime of Majorca — the last cartographer of Sagres
« At this extremity of the world, where land ends and ocean begins, Prince Dom Henrique established his navigation school, attracting the most learned masters of the Mediterranean. »— Gomes Eanes de Zurara, Chronicle of Guinea, 1453
In 1419, Henry the Navigator, third son of King João I, settled at the Sacred Cape of Sagres to create a nautical research center unequaled in Europe. In this natural fortress battered by Atlantic winds, he gathered Majorcan cartographers, Arab astronomers, Genoese shipbuilders, and experienced pilots. The Navigation School of Sagres became the crucible where the innovations were born that would allow the Portuguese to circumnavigate Africa: the caravel, the perfected astrolabe, new astronomical navigation techniques.
For forty years, from 1419 to his death in 1460, Henry financed expedition after expedition along the African coast. Each return enriched the secret maps of Sagres. Madeira (1419), the Azores (1427), Cape Bojador crossed by Gil Eanes (1434), the Gold Coast reached by Dinis Dias (1444): so many stages toward the dreamed-of India. At the Navigator's death, his disciples scattered throughout Europe, carrying with them the technical secrets of Sagres. Bartolomeu Dias would round the Cape of Good Hope in 1488, Vasco da Gama would reach the Indies in 1498: the legacy of Sagres had changed the face of the world.
