Cagliari, four-faced capital
Founded by the Phoenicians in the 9th century BCE under the name Krly, Cagliari became Karales under Carthage and then a major Roman city, equipped with an amphitheatre carved into the limestone. Vast Punic necropolises still lie beneath the modern city, evidence of a Semitic religious continuity of over six centuries.
In the 13th century, the Pisans built the fortified Castello district and raised the Torre dell'Elefante (1307) and the Torre di San Pancrazio (1305), among the best preserved medieval towers in Sardinia. In 1326, the Crown of Aragon took the city and imposed Catalan, which then coexisted with Sardinian, Genoese and the Arabic of Maghreb traders.
