Eight clues for Portugal's last dynasty
From Luís I, in 1870, Cascais became the summer residence of the kings of Portugal. The 16th-century citadel turned into a palace, the bay filled with royal yachts. On 1 February 1908, Carlos I and his heir Luís Filipe were assassinated in Lisbon. Two years later, Manuel II, "the Unfortunate," boarded at Ericeira after the republican revolution — from the bay of Cascais he so loved. Eight clues along the seafront reconstruct the final year of the monarchy.
« "I am the King. If you want to kill me, kill me." »— — Dom Carlos I, Lisbon, 1 February 1908
Luís I chose Cascais in 1870 for the salubrity of sea air and the beauty of the bay. The train linked it to Lisbon in 1889, the town grew. Carlos I, a passionate oceanographer, installed his laboratories, his yacht Amélia and his observatory there — he was, with Prince Albert of Monaco, one of the founders of scientific oceanography.
On 1 February 1908, on Praça do Comércio in Lisbon, republicans Alfredo Costa and Manuel Buíça killed the king and the crown prince. The second son, Manuel, 18, became king by default. He reigned two years before the revolution of 5 October 1910. The young king boarded at Ericeira — some twenty kilometres from Cascais — aboard the yacht Amélia. He would never see Portugal again.
