Galen of Pergamon, the greatest physician after Hippocrates, learned his craft in this sacred hospital where patients healed through dreams.
The Asclepion of Pergamon is one of the most important medical centres of the ancient world. Patients walked the Sacred Way, purified themselves in the baths, then slept in the incubation temple where Asclepius appeared to them in dreams to prescribe a remedy. Galen served as physician to the gladiators here before becoming Marcus Aurelius's personal doctor in Rome. He reportedly left in the sanctuary walls a secret formula, composed of eight ingredients, capable of curing any disease.

The Asclepion, sacred hospital of antiquity
Founded in the 4th century BC, the Asclepion of Pergamon became an internationally renowned medical centre under the Romans. Patients arrived via the Sacred Way, 820 metres long and lined with columns. Treatment combined sacred baths, physical exercise, diet, therapeutic music and incubation — a ritual sleep in the temple where the healer-god Asclepius prescribed the remedy in a dream.
Galen (AD 129-216), born in Pergamon, studied at the Asclepion before becoming the most influential physician in the Roman Empire. His medical treatises remained authoritative for 1,500 years. The 80-metre underground tunnel connecting the baths to the incubation temple is adorned with niches where healed patients deposited ex-votos shaped like the cured organ.
