Eight Gigantomachy reliefs, a secret of the Attalids
Atop the acropolis of Pergamon, the Great Altar of Zeus — one of antiquity's most monumental works — celebrated the gods' victory over the Giants. Its 113-metre-long frieze depicts the Gigantomachy, a cosmic battle between order and chaos. Eumenes II, who erected it in the 2nd century BC, reportedly had a secret message carved in the postures of the defeated Giants — a political testament only initiates could read.
« "What Rome conquers by arms, Pergamon wins by the mind." »— — Attributed to Eumenes II, 2nd century BC
Lysimachus, one of Alexander's successors, entrusts his treasure of 9,000 talents to Philetaerus, guardian of the fortress of Pergamon. He founds the Attalid dynasty. Under Eumenes II (197-159 BC), Pergamon reaches its zenith: the library rivals Alexandria to such an extent that Egypt bans papyrus exports, forcing Pergamon to invent parchment (pergamena).
The Great Altar of Zeus, built around 180 BC, is rediscovered by German engineer Carl Humann in 1878. It is transported to Berlin where it is reassembled at the Pergamon Museum. On site, the altar's foundations still offer a striking view of the acropolis, with the most vertiginous theatre in the Greek world — 10,000 seats on a 36-degree slope.
