Your quest begins in Piazza Cavour, Tarquinia's central square, surrounded by medieval and Renaissance buildings. This historic crossroads, located immediately next to the Duomo, serves as a landmark for visitors exploring the old quarter. It is here, amidst the bustle of the Borgo, that you decipher the first clues leading to the Etruscan remains. The city of Tarquinia, one of the Borghi più belli d'Italia, invites you to travel back in time, from the Etruscan period to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
As you head towards the Mura Etrusche, you discover the remains of the Etruscan walls from the 5th-4th century BC, built from local tuff blocks. These fortifications, originally estimated to be 6 km long and 8-10 m high, are visible along the historical circuit. They were integrated into the medieval fortifications around Tarquinia's centro storico. Following these ancient defenses, you reach Piazza del Duomo, dominated by the Cattedrale de Santa Maria in Castello, built in the 12th century, whose Gothic facade and Baroque interior, remodeled in the 17th century, attest to the city's architectural evolution.
Your journey then leads you to Palazzo Vitelleschi, built between 1439 and 1486 for Cardinal Giovanni Vitelleschi by architect Giuseppe da Amelia. This Renaissance palace, with its turrets and loggia, measures 50m long by 20m wide. Today, it houses the National Etruscan Museum of Tarquinia, home to nearly 700 painted Etruscan tombs. This site is a key component of the UNESCO 2004 World Heritage for the Necropolis of Tarquinia, offering invaluable insight into Etruscan funerary art.
Continuing your exploration of Tarquinia, you take Via di Porta Castello, a historic artery that leads you to Porta Fiorentina. This 14th-century medieval gate, oriented towards Florence, is an integral part of the urban fortifications built between 1350 and 1400 for the city's defense. Its 8-meter high ogival arch represents an important stage in the protection of the Borgo. Piazza Giacomo Matteotti offers a moment of respite before the final stage of your mission in Lazio.
The final stage of your mission takes you to the Necropoli di Tarquinia (Monterozzi), 2 km from the city center, accessible in 20-25 minutes on foot from Piazza Cavour. This Etruscan necropolis, active from the 9th to 3rd century BC, contains 6,000 tombs, 200 of which are painted, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2004 for its exceptional funerary frescoes. The famous Tomb of the Leopards (480 BC), with its polychrome banquets, is a vibrant testament to daily Etruscan life. This tour will have allowed you to unravel the mysteries of the Città degli Etruschi, from Piazza Cavour to the painted tombs, revealing Tarquinia's rich past.
