Paul of Tarsus arrives in Ephesus around AD 52 and stays for three years. He converts many Ephesians, provoking the anger of silversmiths selling Artemis statuettes. The riot breaks out in the Great Theatre, but Paul persists and founds one of the seven Churches of the Apocalypse.
According to tradition, John the Evangelist accompanies Mary to Ephesus after the Crucifixion. The small stone house on Mount Koressos, rediscovered in 1891 through the visions of German mystic Anne Catherine Emmerich, is today a place of pilgrimage recognised by the Vatican. The Basilica of St John, built by Justinian in the 6th century over the apostle's presumed tomb, dominated the city from Ayasuluk Hill.
