The largest temple in the Greek world, four times the size of the Parthenon, housed a statue of Artemis covered in gold and ivory. Burned down the very night Alexander the Great was born, rebuilt even larger, then forgotten beneath sediment for fifteen centuries. Today, a single column rises from a marshy field. But underground, the priestesses had hidden eight ritual seals the fire never reached.

Ephesus and the cult of Artemis
The first sanctuary dedicated to Artemis at Ephesus dates to the 8th century BC. Croesus, King of Lydia, finances its monumental reconstruction around 550 BC: 127 Ionic columns 18 metres tall, a white marble naos, and a chryselephantine statue of the goddess. The temple was one of seven recognised places of asylum in the ancient world.
In 356 BC, Herostratus burns the temple for glory. The Ephesians rebuild it even larger, but the Goths plunder it in AD 262, and Christians recycle its columns for the Basilica of St John and Hagia Sophia. John Turtle Wood rediscovers the site in 1869 after six years of excavation.
