The name Corleone, a small Sicilian village nestled in the heart of the mountains, is inextricably linked to the history of the Cosa Nostra. While collective imagination often retains the romanticized image of an occult power, the reality is more complex and has its roots in the 19th century, at the time of Italian unification. It was in this context of state weakness and power vacuum that forms of criminal organization developed, exploiting poverty and the absence of justice to establish themselves. The origin of the word 'Mafia' itself is subject to various theories, one of them linking it to the Sicilian Vespers of 1282, where the rallying cry 'M.A.F.I.A.' (Morte Alla Francia Italia Anela - Death to France, Italy Yearns) would have marked a popular revolt against foreign oppressors, symbolizing a desire for autonomy and justice, later perverted.

Faced with the growing grip of the Mafia, courageous voices rose. Leoluca Orlando, lawyer and politician, was one of these emblematic figures. Mayor of Palermo several times starting in the 1980s, he embodied the 'Palermo Spring,' a period of civic renewal and fierce struggle against organized crime. His policy of transparency and his determination to denounce the links between the Mafia and political power marked a turning point, inspiring many citizens to break the wall of omertà and demand a Sicily free from Mafia influence. Corleone, though often seen as a stronghold, is also a place where this resistance manifested.
