A marquisate and its contraband
The Del Carretto ruled Finale from the 13th to the 17th century. Their capital, Finalborgo, protected by Castel San Giovanni and an intact wall, filled with Renaissance palaces. The Santa Chiara convent later became an archaeological museum keeping traces of the region’s prehistoric caves.
To fund their wars against Genoa and Savoy, the marquises tolerated a sophisticated maritime smuggling network. Underground galleries linked the palace cellars to the Finale Ligure coast. In 1650, just before the marquisate was sold to Spain, the map of these tunnels vanished from family archives.
