On 24 October 79 CE, Vesuvius buried Pompeii under six metres of ash in less than a day.

The Roman city is frozen to the second: bakeries with bread still in the oven, lupanar and its frescoes, resident graffiti, intact patrician houses. Forty-eight hours before the eruption, a Greek merchant from Misenum is said to have hidden a "library of the future" in seven places of the city — texts he believed could survive any disaster.

« "I thought I was perishing with the world, and the world with me." »
Pliny the Younger, letter to Tacitus

A frozen Roman city

Pompeii, a Roman colony since 80 BCE, was a prosperous city of 11 000 inhabitants at the foot of Vesuvius. Its paved streets, forum, baths, 20 000-seat amphitheatre and villas decorated with frescoes made it a showcase of imperial lifestyle. The House of the Faun, Villa of the Mysteries, Lupanar with its explicit frescoes, the bakery of pistor Modestus: everything is there, suspended.

On 24 October 79, Vesuvius exploded in a 33-kilometre-high column. Pyroclastic surges rushed down at 700 °C. Pompeii disappeared under lapilli, Herculaneum under pyroclastic mud. Rediscovered in 1748, the city has since yielded every detail of Roman daily life — down to the graffito of a jilted lover and the last loaf baked on the morning of the disaster.

Frequently asked questions

Q01The Last Day of Pompeii — is it a guided trail or a free-form hunt?

It's a semi-guided trail: GPS points you to the next stop, but you find the camera clue and solve the puzzle yourself. No app to install, everything runs in your browser.

Q02Can we split The Last Day of Pompeii across two days?

Yes — your code stays active and progress is saved. You can start Saturday afternoon, finish Sunday morning. Some players actually prefer this format to make the most of a full weekend on site.

Q03Can we do The Last Day of Pompeii as a family with kids?

Yes, from age 6 with an adult reading puzzles aloud, and from age 12 on their own. Kids love the "find the camera clue" part — it's very visual, gets them genuinely involved.

Q04What if we get stuck on a puzzle?

Three hint levels per puzzle, with a small increasing time penalty. If truly stuck after level 3, you can skip the step (45-min penalty). The point: nobody stays blocked and goes home frustrated.
