In 1968, the Belice Valley trembled under a devastating earthquake, obliterating Gibellina Vecchia and burying its secrets beneath rubble. Rather than erase the tragedy, artist Alberto Burri sealed the ruins in 1985 with his monumental Cretto di Burri—a vast white concrete shroud mimicking the town's vanished streets. But whispers persist: Burri embedded cryptic symbols in the blocks, a final puzzle revealing a concealed fortune or the true cause of the quake's unnatural fury. As you navigate the silent labyrinth of Crettopoli, hunt for these etched clues amid the fissured paths and towering slabs. Each landmark—from the preserved church outlines to the forgotten necropolis edges—holds a fragment of the code. Outwit the shadows of the past: solve Burri's enigma to expose what he hid from the world, before the creeping decay claims it eternally. The truth awaits in Gibellina Vecchia's cracked heart.

« I wanted to give the idea of the permanence of death, but also its transformation into life. »— Alberto Burri, artist
On the night of January 14-15, 1968, a series of powerful earthquakes struck the Belice Valley in western Sicily. Entire villages were wiped off the map, including Gibellina. The damage was immense, human losses tragic, and tens of thousands of people were left homeless. Facing this catastrophe, reconstruction became a national priority, but in Gibellina, it took a unique turn under the impetus of Mayor Ludovico Corrao.
Corrao, a visionary, refused a simple identical reconstruction. He invited world-renowned artists and architects, such as Alberto Burri, Pietro Consagra, and Arnaldo Pomodoro, to participate in the creation of a new town, Gibellina Nuova, and to transform the ruins of the old into a commemorative artwork. Burri's 'Grande Cretto', a concrete shroud covering the rubble of the old village, became the poignant symbol of this petrified memory and a bold rebirth.
