When the banana trade spawned palaces
At the end of the 19th century, Las Palmas experienced a golden age thanks to the banana trade and the free port. The great merchants, enriched by trade with England, commissioned architect Fernando Navarro to transform the Triana quarter into a showcase of modernity. Façades adorned with wrought iron, stained glass with floral motifs, undulating balconies — Canarian Modernismo was born, a unique blend of European Art Nouveau and Atlantic sensibility.

Triana's golden age
The Triana quarter owes its rise to the free port decreed in 1852, which transformed Las Palmas into a hub of Atlantic trade. English banana companies, German shipowners and local merchants settled there and wanted residences worthy of their new fortunes.
Architect Fernando Navarro, trained in Madrid, brought Modernismo to the island from 1900 onwards. His masterpiece is the Gabinete Literario, a former theatre transformed into a literary club with a façade of stunning floral exuberance. He also designed the Quegles House, the Pérez Galdós Theatre and dozens of private homes along the Calle Mayor.
Navarro died in 1920, taking with him the plans for his final project — a building he considered his absolute masterpiece. The plans were never found, but it is said that clues to their location hide in the ornaments of his buildings.
