When Clement VII fled Rome after the 1527 Sack, he took refuge in Orvieto and had a tunnel dug — so legend says — linking the papal palace to the Etruscan caves to hide the secret Avignon treasury. From the Pozzo di San Patrizio to the Pozzo della Cava, clues still mark the tuff city.

Orvieto, the tuff fortress
Founded by the Etruscans in the 9th century BC as Velzna, Orvieto rises on a volcanic tuff plateau. The Etruscans carved hundreds of wells, cisterns and tunnels into it. The city turned medieval without its underbelly ever ceasing to be inhabited.
In the 13th and 14th centuries Orvieto often hosted the popes: the Gothic Duomo (begun in 1290) is one of Italy’s finest. In 1527 Clement VII took refuge there after the Sack of Rome and commissioned the Pozzo di San Patrizio, a double-helix engineering masterpiece completed in 1537.
