The Athenian prisoners of 413

Seven thousand voices in a stone ear
From the Teatro Greco to the Roman Amphitheatre, the Neapolis park preserves the quarries where 7000 Athenians were thrown after the 413 BCE defeat. Some carved messages into the rock. Never translated, they await attentive ears in the cave of Dionysius, cut like a huge donkey ear.
« "Those who knew Euripides were spared." »— — Plutarch, Lives, Nicias
In 415 BCE Athens launched a colossal expedition of 200 ships against Syracuse. Two years later, in 413, the Athenian fleet was annihilated in the Great Harbour. Seven thousand captured soldiers were cast into the latomias — vast open-air quarries — where they spent the winter exposed to cold, hunger and sun. Many died. According to Plutarch, those who could recite Euripides’ tragedies were freed by their Sicilian jailers.
The Latomia del Paradiso, the largest, contains the Orecchio di Dionisio, a 23-metre ear-shaped cave whose extraordinary acoustics allowed Dionysius the Tyrant — per a legend revived by Caravaggio in 1608 — to eavesdrop from above on the prisoners’ talk. The nearby Teatro Greco, one of the greatest in the Hellenic world, hosted the premieres of Aeschylus’ plays "The Persians" and "The Aetnaeans" from the 5th century.
You're not just buying an escape game. You're carrying a living guide — historical anecdotes, forgotten legends, key monuments, hidden architecture — unfolding as you go.
At each stop, places ordinary guides miss — secret façades, sculpted crests, alleys steeped in history.
Every riddle is rooted in a real historical fact or local legend. You leave with dozens of stories to tell.
Learn to read buildings — flamboyant Gothic, Baroque, Art Deco — like a real art historian, while having fun.
Walk through the city like a novel's character — every alley becomes a stage, every square a theatre.
A voice walks with you at every step, tells the story of each place, reads clues, adds a cinematic feel.

A golden chest floats in front of the monument. Tap → opening animation → reveals a secret message.
Point your phone at the façade: a knight, witch, monk, sailor, detective or ghost appears full-screen and speaks to you in your language with their dedicated ElevenLabs voice (each character has their own unique voice) — your living guide.

Outdoor escape game format: no physical locks, no actor, no fixed time slot. You start when you want, progress through Neapolis Archaeological Park, Syracuse with your phone, and the city itself is the set. More immersive on local history, more flexible in pace.
Easy stroll: between stops you walk 3 to 7 minutes. No tough climbs unless flagged on the product page. If you really want to push, you can jog between stops, but that's not the point.
No, solo works very well. The outdoor escape game format in self-guided mode leaves room for introspection: read the story at your pace, hunt clues like a detective. 2-6 players is more social, solo is more contemplative.
Spring and autumn are the best seasons: mild temperatures, fewer tourists, gorgeous light. Summer is also great but go for early morning before 11 or late afternoon. Winter is perfectly playable, especially in southern cities — Neapolis Archaeological Park, Syracuse often feels more authentic then.
