Syracuse, the greatest Greek city
Founded by Corinthians in 734 BCE on the island of Ortygia, Syracuse became in the 5th century the greatest Greek city, more populous than Athens. Dionysius the Elder, tyrant from 405 to 367, ruled by raising 27 km of walls, the Mediterranean’s strongest fleet and a scientific laboratory where Archimedes, kinsman of King Hiero II, would later work.
In 212 BCE, after a two-year siege in which Archimedes’ war machines — claws, burning mirrors, catapults — held Rome at bay, Syracuse fell. General Marcellus ordered the old scholar spared, but an ignorant soldier killed him. The Ortygia Duomo still embeds, in its baroque walls, the Doric columns of the temple of Athena built in 480 BCE after the Greek victory over Carthage.
