Trani, at the crossroads of Mediterranean civilizations, was home to a flourishing Jewish community from the Early Middle Ages. The Giudecca, its Jewish quarter, was a vibrant center of commerce, craftsmanship, and above all, scholarship. Figures such as Rabbi Isacco di Trani, a 12th-century Talmudist whose influence extended far beyond Italy, attest to the importance of his school and library, rich in Hebrew manuscripts of philosophy, science, and poetry. However, the fate of this community changed with the integration of Apulia into the Kingdom of Aragon. The decrees expelling Jews from Spain in 1492 were a dark prelude to those that struck southern Italy. In 1510, under the reign of Ferdinand II, Trani was the scene of a mass expulsion. Jews had to choose between forced conversion or exile, abandoning their possessions.
