The stanzas that hide a map
Published in 1516 under Este protection, Orlando Furioso is one of the greatest chivalric poems of the Renaissance. But some stanzas are said to be a codex: from Casa Ariosto to Palazzo Schifanoia via the Ghetto, seven places map the hiding of a book the Inquisition never found.
« "Le donne, i cavallier, l’arme, gli amori..." »— — Ludovico Ariosto, 1516
Capital of the Este from the 13th to the 16th century, Ferrara is one of the best preserved Renaissance cities in Europe, UNESCO-listed. The Castello Estense, moated in the heart of the city, protected the patron dukes who invited Ariosto, Tasso, Cosmè Tura. The Palazzo dei Diamanti (1493) with its 8,500 marble spikes embodies that ambition.
Ferrara also hosted one of the largest Jewish communities in Italy, with a ghetto formalised in 1627 but older. Lucrezia Borgia, wife of Alfonso I d’Este from 1502, ran a literary circle close to Ariosto. Legend says she circulated texts forbidden by Rome.

Yes, from age 6 with an adult reading puzzles aloud, and from age 12 on their own. Kids love the "find the camera clue" part — it's very visual, gets them genuinely involved.
Morning between 10 and 11, or early afternoon around 2 PM, is ideal. You still have daylight ahead, Ferrara, Renaissance city of the Este is less crowded, and the light is better for camera clues.
