Said to be possessed by the devil, he left behind a cursed city to redeem. Montagnana's 2 km of intact walls, 24 towers and 4 gates form the open-air playground of a medieval riddle.

Montagnana, city of perfect walls
Ezzelino III da Romano (1194-1259), the 'Tyrant of the Trevisan March', ruled much of the Veneto through terror in the 13th century. A fanatical Ghibelline, excommunicated by the pope, he was likened to a demon by his contemporaries and appears in Dante's Inferno, plunged into a river of boiling blood.
Montagnana, fiercely contested between Padua and Venice, inherited from these struggles one of Italy's best preserved fortified ensembles: 2 km of curtain walls, 24 towers, 4 monumental gates including the Rocca degli Alberi, and the Castello di San Zeno. The Serenissima finally annexed it in 1405 and reinforced its defences against Milan.

Hunt the clue — it materializes as golden letters on the real wall or floats in front of you.
