Tauromenion, balcony of Sicily
Founded in 358 BCE by Greek survivors of Naxos expelled by Dionysius of Syracuse, Tauromenion perched on Mount Tauro 200 m above the sea. In the 3rd century BCE, under tyrant Hiero II, it built its Greek theatre — reworked by the Romans in the 2nd century — which offers antiquity’s most famous natural stage: Etna, the Ionian and the Calabrian coast in line.
In the Middle Ages Arabs, Normans and Aragonese succeeded one another. The town remained an aristocratic refuge: Goethe in 1787 wrote fiery pages here in his "Italian Journey"; D. H. Lawrence lived here in the 1920s; Hollywood has filmed here since 1950. The Teatro Greco still hosts a summer festival where Etna, 30 km away, sometimes smokes live behind the actors.
