Su Nuraxi, the watching stone
The nuraghic civilisation flourished in Sardinia from 1800 to 500 BCE. It left more than 7,000 nuraghi — truncated dry-stone towers without mortar — none of which bears any inscription. Su Nuraxi, at Barumini, is the largest and best preserved: a central keep surrounded by four towers, itself ringed by a round village, enclosures and wells.
Archaeologist Giovanni Lilliu uncovered it between 1950 and 1957 beneath a hill that had hidden it for over two thousand years. UNESCO-listed in 1997, Su Nuraxi still raises the same questions: what did these people do, what language did they speak, why build so many towers? The astronomical alignments recently measured suggest it was a stone calendar as much as a sanctuary.
