From Teutonic Fort to Royal Residence

Bran's origins trace back to the early 13th century when the Teutonic Order constructed a wooden fort called Dietrichstein in 1212. This initial fortification was built to protect trade routes and the mountain pass between Transylvania and Wallachia. This wooden structure was destroyed during the Mongol invasion of 1242.

The stone castle that stands today began its construction in 1377. King Louis I of Hungary granted the Saxons of Kronstadt (modern-day Brașov) the privilege to build a stone castle at their own expense and labor. This new fortress, completed by 1388, served as a defensive stronghold against the Ottoman Empire and also functioned as a customs post, collecting taxes on goods passing through the Rucăr-Bran Pass. The village of Bran developed around the castle, its existence deeply intertwined with the fortress.

A Royal Summer Residence and Museum

Bran Castle's military importance decreased by the mid-18th century. A significant shift occurred in 1920 when the castle was given to Queen Marie of Romania by the Saxons of Brașov. Queen Marie transformed the medieval fortress into a royal summer residence, undertaking renovations that added modern conveniences while preserving its historical character. She commissioned the addition of staircases, reading nooks, and rooms with Renaissance furniture, and developed an English-style park with a Tea House. After Queen Marie's death, the castle passed to her daughter, Princess Ileana, who used it as a summer retreat and converted it into a hospital for wounded soldiers during World War II.

In 1948, the communist regime seized the castle, exiling the royal family and nationalizing the property. For several decades, Bran Castle operated as a museum of medieval artifacts. In 2009, the castle was returned to Archduke Dominic, Queen Marie's grandson, and his sisters, becoming the country's first private museum.

It features relocated peasant houses, farm buildings, and a church, all furnished with authentic household items, tools, and textiles, offering insight into local history and traditions.
• —Piața Centrală (Central Square of Bran village) — This is the center of the village, surrounded by old buildings and a market. You will find local artisans selling traditional crafts, souvenirs, and regional food products.
• —Turcu Stream — Walk along the Turcu stream, which flows below the castle. It offers a different perspective of the fortress and a natural setting.
• —Public Viewpoint from DN73 road — There is a specific spot on the DN73 road that provides a wide view of Bran Castle, suitable for photography.
• —Old Village House Facades — As you walk through the village, observe the traditional architecture of the old village houses, many of which are visible from the street and offer a glimpse into the area's history.
• —Public Fountain or Historic Water Structure — Look for historic water sources in the village, which often have stories tied to the local community and its daily life.

The best time to visit Bran is during spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October). During these periods, the weather is mild, with average daytime temperatures ranging from 13°C to 21°C in spring and 14°C to 25°C in autumn. The landscapes are scenic, with blooming flowers in spring and foliage in autumn. Crowds are also generally smaller than in the peak summer months.

Summer (July and August) brings the warmest weather, with average highs around 21°C to 24°C, but it is also the busiest season, leading to queues at attractions. Winter (December to March) can be very cold, with average lows around -8°C and snowfall. Some outdoor activities may be limited.

Bran is a small village, easily explored on foot. Most attractions, including Bran Castle, are within walking distance of each other. To reach Bran, the most common route is to take a train to Brașov from Bucharest Nord station, which takes approximately 2.5 to 4 hours. From Brașov, regular buses depart from Autogara 2 (Bus Station No. 2) to Bran every 30 minutes on weekdays and hourly on weekends. The bus journey takes about 45 minutes and tickets are bought directly from the driver with cash.

If driving, Bran is about 30 kilometers southwest of Brașov via the DN73 road. Paid parking is available directly in front of Bran Castle for approximately $1 per hour. There are also free parking spaces further into Bran village, though these operate on a first-come, first-served basis and may require a walk of 100-500 meters to the castle.

While there is no specific market day, the area around Bran Castle's entrance features numerous souvenir stalls and local vendors daily.
