From Greek Colony to Roman Exile

Constanța, originally known as Tomis, has a history spanning over 2,500 years. It was founded around the 6th century BC by Greek colonists from Miletus, who established it as a trading post. Its location on a peninsula made it an important port on the Black Sea.

In 29 BC, the Romans conquered the region, and Tomis became part of the Roman Empire. The poet Ovid was exiled here in 8 AD by Emperor Augustus. Ovid spent the last years of his life in Tomis, describing it as remote. The city was later renamed Constantiana in the 4th century AD, in honor of Constantia, the half-sister of Emperor Constantine the Great. The name was shortened to Constanța during the Ottoman era.

Medieval Decline and Modern Revival

Constanța developed during the 13th century under Genoese merchants in the Black Sea. Its prosperity declined two centuries later when it fell under Turkish rule, becoming a fishing village. After the Romanian War of Independence in 1877-1878, Constanța and the region of Northern Dobruja were ceded by the Ottoman Empire to Romania. This marked a new era of development, as it became Romania's main seaport and a transit point for exports.

King Carol I initiated modernization programs in the late 19th century, including the construction of the modern Port of Constanța, with the cornerstone laid in 1896. The Constanța Casino, an Art Nouveau building, was also constructed during this period, with its cornerstone laid in 1880. This symbolized the city's revival as a resort and port.

• —Piața Ovidiu (Ovid Square) — This central square has a bronze statue of the Roman poet Ovid, sculpted by Ettore Ferrari in 1887. It marks the place of Ovid's exile.
• —Constanța National History and Archaeology Museum — Housed in the former City Hall, this museum displays artifacts from Constanța's history, from ancient Greek and Roman periods to the modern era. It contains archaeological finds, including columns, amphorae, and capitals.
• —Roman Edifice with Mosaic — These remains, dating from the 4th century AD, feature approximately 9,150 square feet of mosaics. They were once part of a commercial complex that connected the upper city with the ancient port.
• —Genovese Lighthouse — This octagonal stone lighthouse was rebuilt between 1858 and 1860 by French-Armenian engineer Artin Aslan. It replaced an older structure from around 1300. It operated until 1913.
• —Carol I Mosque — Completed in 1910, this mosque, also known as the Grand Mosque of Constanța, has a minaret that offers views over the city and the Black Sea. It is an architectural landmark reflecting the city's Ottoman heritage.
• —Constanța Casino Esplanade — The Art Nouveau Constanța Casino, inaugurated in 1910, is a building facing the sea. The esplanade around it offers views of the Black Sea and the coastline. The casino building is currently undergoing restoration.

The period between June and September is suitable for a visit to Constanța. During July and August, temperatures average around 30°C, and the Black Sea water reaches 24-26°C. This is peak season, so expect crowds and higher prices, especially with events like the Neversea festival in early July.

For fewer crowds, consider June and September. Temperatures are pleasant for exploring and swimming, with sea temperatures around 20-22°C. May offers mild temperatures, but it is typically the wettest month. Winter, from November to March, is cold with occasional frost. Many tourist facilities, particularly in Mamaia, will be closed. The archaeology museum remains open year-round.

Constanța is connected by various transport options. Mihail Kogălniceanu International Airport (CND) is about 25-26 kilometers north of the city center, with taxis and an hourly bus service to the train station. For international connections, fly into Bucharest (OTP) and take a train (around 2.5 hours) or drive (2 hours on the A2 highway) to Constanța.

Within the city, the old town is walkable, with most main sights within a 15-20 minute radius. Constanța has a bus network with 18-21 routes. Tickets can be bought at kiosks with the CT Bus logo or via SMS, costing around 1.5 lei for a one-hour ride. Uber and Bolt are also available. Land roads outside the main highways can be in poor condition.
