From Roman Stronghold to Medieval Capital

Alba Iulia's story begins over 2,000 years ago as Apulum, a Dacian center. After the Roman conquest of Dacia, it became a Roman military camp and the largest city in Roman Dacia, home to the XIII Gemina Roman Legion. Remains of this Roman castrum, covering about 37.5 hectares, are visible today.

By the 9th to 11th centuries, the city was known by the Slavic name Bălgrad. In the 16th century, Alba Iulia was the capital of the Principality of Transylvania from 1542 to 1690. In 1599, Michael the Brave, Prince of Wallachia, entered Alba Iulia after a victory at the Battle of Șelimbăr. He proclaimed himself ruler of Wallachia, Transylvania, and Moldavia, achieving a temporary unification of the three Romanian principalities. This act established Alba Iulia's symbolic importance for Romanian unity.

A Symbol of Unification and a Vauban Masterpiece

After Michael the Brave's death in 1601, the city experienced sieges and plunder. Alba Iulia later became part of the Habsburg Empire in 1690. Under Habsburg rule, the Alba Carolina Citadel was constructed between 1715 and 1738. Designed in the Vauban style by military architect Giovanni Morando Visconti, it became one of the largest star-shaped fortifications in Southeast Europe, with seven bastions and over 12 kilometers of defensive walls. This military stronghold later served as the backdrop for another defining moment in Romanian history.

On December 1, 1918, Alba Iulia was the site of the Great National Assembly, where 1,228 delegates voted for the unification of Transylvania with Romania. This event brought together Romanian-inhabited territories into a single nation. The Coronation Cathedral was built between 1921 and 1922 for the coronation of King Ferdinand and Queen Marie as monarchs of Greater Romania on October 15, 1922, further establishing the city's role in the nation's identity.

• —Poarta III a Cetății Alba Carolina (Third Gate of the Citadel) — This is the most ornate of the citadel's gates, a Baroque structure from the 18th century. It has statues and reliefs depicting mythological figures and military trophies.
• —Sala Unirii (Union Hall) — Built between 1898 and 1900 as a military casino, this building is where the Great National Assembly voted for the unification of Transylvania with Romania on December 1, 1918. Inside, a gallery displays busts of figures from that era.
• —Muzeul Național al Unirii (National Museum of Unification) — Housed in the "Babylon" building, a former military officers' residence from 1851-1853, this museum has archaeological and historical collections that trace the city's existence from Roman times to the Great Union.
• —Catedrala Catolică Sfântul Mihail (St. Michael's Catholic Cathedral) — This is the oldest and longest cathedral in Romania; construction began in the 11th century and continued through the 13th century. It shows Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles, with later Renaissance and Baroque additions. It is a burial place for several Transylvanian royal figures.
• —Catedrala Încoronării (Coronation Cathedral) — A Romanian Orthodox cathedral built between 1921 and 1922 in the Neo-Brâncovenesc style, it was the site of the coronation of King Ferdinand and Queen Marie in 1922. The coronation ceremony took place outside, in front of the bell tower.
• —Palatul Principilor (Princes' Palace) — This palace was once the residence of Transylvanian princes, including Michael the Brave during his rule in 1599. Its courtyard offers a view of its past importance.
• —Obelisk of Horea, Cloșca, and Crișan — This 22.5-meter-high Art Deco obelisk, unveiled in 1937, commemorates the leaders of the 1784-1785 peasant revolt. It stands in front of the Third Gate of the Alba Carolina Citadel, on an artificial hill.
• —Equestrian Statue of Michael the Brave — Located on the esplanade of the Princely Palace, this 8.46-meter-high bronze statue by Oscar Han, unveiled in 1968, depicts Michael the Brave in a pose commemorating his entry into Alba Iulia on November 1, 1599.

For pleasant weather and outdoor exploration, visit Alba Iulia from May to September. Temperatures are mild, averaging 17°C to 30°C (63°F to 86°F), suitable for walking and sightseeing. July and August are the warmest months, with historical reenactments, including the Changing of the Guard ceremony. June can be the wettest month, with an average of 122 mm of rainfall.

To avoid larger crowds, consider visiting during spring (April-May) or autumn (September-October). The weather remains pleasant, with less rain and fewer people. Winter (December-February) is cold, with temperatures around 3°C (37°F) and shorter daylight hours; many outdoor activities may not be available.

Alba Iulia is accessible by train, with a stop at Alba Iulia Station. The nearest airport is Sibiu International Airport (SBZ), about 80 km (50 miles) away, with bus connections to Alba Iulia.

Within the Alba Carolina Citadel, the main historical area is pedestrian-friendly. Attractions are concentrated within the citadel walls. For those arriving by car, parking is available outside the citadel gates. Public transportation is available for the wider city, but walking is the best way to see the historic center. Some smaller shops or services might have reduced hours on weekends or holidays. Check opening times for specific attractions, especially museums and cathedrals, as some may have limited hours.
