Saxon Settlement and Trade Power

Brașov's history began in 1211 when the Teutonic Knights established a fortified settlement on an ancient Dacian site, by order of King Andrew II of Hungary. This location, at the crossroads of trade routes connecting the Ottoman Empire with Western Europe, attracted German settlers, known as Transylvanian Saxons. These Saxons, primarily from the Rhineland, Flanders, and the Moselle region, developed the town, which became known as Kronstadt (German for 'Crown City') or Corona (Latin). By the 13th century, Brașov was one of Transylvania's seven walled citadels, or Siebenbürgen. The Saxons' mercantile activity, combined with a favorable tax regime, allowed them to accumulate wealth and political influence. This prosperity is visible in the architecture of the Old Town, with buildings from the 15th to the 19th centuries.

City Defenses and Guild Influence

During the 15th and 17th centuries, Brașov invested in its defenses due to repeated attacks, particularly from the Ottoman Empire. The city constructed inner and outer walls, along with defense towers and gates. These fortifications, some once 40 feet high and 7 feet thick, were maintained by the city's craft guilds. For example, the Weavers' Bastion, built in two stages between 1421–1436 and 1570–1573, was defended and maintained by the linen weavers' guild. Catherine's Gate, built in 1559, was the responsibility of the Tailors' Guild. The Black Church, originally named St. Mary's Church, was constructed between 1385 and 1477. It earned its current name after a fire in 1689, which blackened its walls and partially damaged its interior. The reconstruction, completed by 1722, rebuilt the interior in a Baroque style.

• —Council Square (Piața Sfatului) — This square has been the city's commercial, administrative, and social center since the 14th century. It is surrounded by Baroque buildings and the Council House (Casa Sfatului) with its tower, which now houses the Brașov County Museum of History.
• —Black Church (Biserica Neagră) — Romania's largest Gothic church, built between 1385 and 1477. Its interior, largely Baroque due to reconstruction after the 1689 fire, features balconies, stained glass windows, a large organ with 4,000 pipes, and a collection of 15th and 16th-century Anatolian carpets.
• —Catherine's Gate (Poarta Ecaterinei) — The only original city gate from medieval times still standing. Built in 1559, its four small corner turrets symbolize the city's judicial autonomy and the right to carry out capital punishment. Above the entrance, you can see Brașov's coat of arms.
• —St. Nicholas Church (Biserica Sfântul Nicolae) — In the Șchei district, this church was established in 1292, with the stone church erected in the late 1400s. Above the main door, you will find a mural of St. Nicholas.
• —Weavers' Bastion (Bastionul Țesătorilor) — The largest and best-preserved medieval bastion in Brașov, built in stages between 1421 and 1573. It now houses a museum with archaeological finds from the Bârsa Country's fortification system, including armor and medieval weapons, and a large model of 17th-century Brașov.
• —White Tower (Turnul Alb) — Built between 1460 and 1494, this semicircular observation tower stands 30 meters above the city walls. It offers views of the Old Town, the Black Church, and Mount Tâmpa.

The best time to visit Brașov is during April–June and September–October for a balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds. Daytime temperatures in May and June range from 18-24°C, with green mountain scenery. September and October offer golden Carpathian foliage and lower prices. July and August are the warmest months, with highs around 28°C, but this is also peak season for domestic tourism, meaning more crowds and higher prices. May is typically the wettest month. Winter (December–March) is cold, with temperatures dropping to -5 to -10°C, and is suitable for skiing in Poiana Brașov. The Christmas market in Piața Sfatului is open in December. Avoid July and August if you prefer a quieter experience.

Brașov is in central Romania, about 166 km north of Bucharest. The closest international airport is Brașov (GHV). If flying into Bucharest (OTP), direct coach services are available to Brașov, often meeting flights and dropping passengers at the train station. Brașov's main railway station, Gara Brașov, has connections to major cities like Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, and Sibiu.

Brașov's compact Old Town is explored on foot. For longer distances, a public transportation network of buses and trolleybuses is operated by RATBV. You can purchase a 24-hour transport card or a rechargeable card at RATBV kiosks, such as those at Livada Poștei or near the train station. Taxis are available and are generally metered. Parking can be found outside the pedestrianized Old Town area.
