Rhegion, gate of Magna Graecia
Founded in the 8th century BCE by colonists from Chalcis, Rhegion became one of the great cities of Magna Graecia, facing Sicily across the Strait. It produced philosophers and lawmakers before being absorbed into Rome in the 3rd century BCE.
In 1972, a holidaying diver found two life-sized bronze statues at eight metres’ depth near Riace Marina. Dated to the 5th century BCE, the Riace Bronzes are now considered the finest surviving examples of classical Greek sculpture. Their exact origin, destination and shipwreck are still debated.
