The 12th-century Romanesque mosaic covering the nave is not purely a theological programme. Read the right way, it draws a map of Italy seen from the east, with seven points marked that may indicate weapons caches left by the invaders.

The easternmost town of Italy, Otranto was Byzantine, Norman, then Aragonese. Its cathedral, consecrated in 1088, holds on its floor the largest medieval mosaic in Europe: a Tree of Life signed by the monk Pantaleone around 1165, mixing Adam, Eve, Alexander the Great, King Arthur and the zodiac.
On 14 August 1480, an Ottoman fleet landed and took the town. The 800 inhabitants who refused conversion were beheaded on the Minerva hill. Their relics now rest in the Chapel of the Martyrs, beatified in 1771 and canonised in 2013 by Pope Francis.
