Hierapolis — the white spa city on the travertine cliff
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
Eight pools, eight mysteries, an oracle of white stone
The 36°C thermal water, loaded with calcium, has flowed down the mountainside for millennia, forming natural pools of immaculate white. At the summit, the city of Hierapolis — the "sacred city" — housed the largest baths in Asia Minor, a necropolis of 1,200 tombs and a unique oracle of the dead in the Greco-Roman world. The priests of the Plutonium claimed to communicate with the deceased through deadly gases escaping from a cave.
« "The water that gives life here also sculpts the stone, and the stone keeps the memory of the dead." »— — Strabo, Geography, 1st century BC
Hierapolis is founded around 190 BC by Eumenes II of Pergamon around a sacred thermal spring. Under the Romans, it becomes a luxury spa resort. The apostle Philip is crucified there in AD 80 — his octagonal martyrium, rediscovered in 2011, is one of the great recent archaeological discoveries.
The necropolis, one of the best preserved from antiquity, stretches for two kilometres with 1,200 tombs of all styles: sarcophagi, tumuli, funerary houses. The Plutonium, a cave from which CO₂ vapours escape, was considered a gateway to the underworld. Italian archaeologists proved in 2018 that priests exploited variations in gas concentration between day and night.

Usually 2 to 4 km of total walking, within 1.5 km as the crow flies from the start point. The route is designed to be walkable at a relaxed pace, no public transport needed.
Great two-person format. Narration is dramatic without overdoing it, puzzles are designed to spark conversation. Ideal for new relationships or anniversaries — you discover the city and coordinate on puzzles simultaneously.
Morning between 10 and 11, or early afternoon around 2 PM, is ideal. You still have daylight ahead, Pamukkale and Hierapolis site, Denizli is less crowded, and the light is better for camera clues.
